30 hp 2stroke runs counterclockwise

My 1998 30hp Mercury 2 stroke cranks clockwise. When I release the key it fires and runs counterclockwise. I replaced the trigger to no avail. Any thoughts? Thanks

Timing too far retarded would be my guess.....nothing in the 2 stroke to determine direction other than timing....you time it +TDC is runs CW. Time it - TDC it runs the other way even though you are cranking it CW.....cranking puts fuel in the cylinders. When the spark occurs it sets off the explosion. If the timing is retarded it doesn't care which way it was cranking....when the explosion occurs, it forces the direction of rotation.....unlike 4 strokers.
