"I am having a problem trying to get my 1988 johnson 30 to idle correctly, the motor had a blown water jacket gasket and head gasket which caused salt water to enter the cylinders, the previous owners of the motor did not know how to fix the problem so it sat for aprox. 2years with the salt water in both cylinders, i spent 6 hours freeing her up, i replaced head gasket, water jacket gasket, reed valve gaskets, and water pump, i rebuilt the carb. and set the idle adjustment screw, then checked compression, each cylinder is about 125 "which is remarkable because of those pistons and rings sitting in the salt water for so long" then i replaced the spark plug wires, and spark plugs. i had her running pretty good but the day after i gave it a test run and figured everything was perfect, i took it for one more test and i cant get her to idle anymore i have cleaned to carb over and over and i havent found a spec of trash, and no trash should be getting past the fuel and water separator, i thought it could be that the top seal could have gone bad around the crank so i took some w/d 40 and sprayed around it and hoped it would pick up RPM but nothing happened, i dont know what to do now i am completely lost, can anyone help, it would be much appreciated!!!!"

"ck fuel for water...ck spark.

"ck fuel for water...ck spark.....ck linkage and synchronization of ign and carb.ck plugs for wtr intrusion, from new hd gasket install.re-torque hd gasket."

"i have done each of those things already but i am still having problems, can any one tell me how to remove the top crank seal i have never removed one before,

THANKS!!

"that would be a rare problem.

"that would be a rare problem.......
look for a large amount of oil,on top of powerhead, top of crank...lots of oil,bad seal.....clean,.look elsewhere for problems."

"Ryan..

have you removed and cleaned the grounds on EVERY ignition component? remember, mag ignitions put out least ooomph at idle (as opposed to coil ignition, which has least output at high rpm) so if you have iffy ground, it would show up 1st at idle."

"w/salt wtr sitting in that eng so long,u may never get it to idle good...due to rusted rings leaking,etc..etc.."
