" I recently purchased my firs
" I recently purchased my first boat a 1988 Maxum with a inboard/outboard MerCruiser 3.0L 4-cylinder motor. I started it up a few times and ran the engine for 10 minutes without any problems except for one of those times where turning the key to the start position the engine did not turn over, but when I retried moving the key to the start postion it started. The guy I bought it from said it has done that before, and thought it an ignition problem. I trailered the boat home, and the next day tried to restart the motor without success. The wifes a little cranky and I'm hearing a friend tell me the two best times in a boat owners life is when he buys a boat and later sells it. Here is my description. When I turn the key to the start position and push the throttle handle down to "full throttle" the engine cranks and starts but when I back off the throttle and return the key to the run position it won't stay running. Each time it starts up, but won't stay running when I put the key back to the run positon and throttle reduced once I hear it starting. I tried various throttle position combinations with no changes only the engine reving louder as the throttle is closer to full throttle. It has fuel, new plugs, good battery, and fuel seen in the carb. I friend thinks it could be a carb. float problem. Could it also be an ingnition problem? I don't know and the kids want to go tubbing. "
