I bought a good running 1958(?) Evinrude 7-1/2 hp motor for $175...How am I doing?

I bought a good running Mariner 15 hp for $575...How am I doing?

I bought a Sears 9.9 hp motor...Is this an Evinrude design?

Getting started...can hardly find any pertinent info or history for these motors.

"Condition is the driving forc

"Condition is the driving force of value. After that the maker, then model type, and age. What you are willing to pay for what you want should be your indicator of value. How bad did you want those motors? Everybody has their own idea on what a motor is worth, so if you think you got a good deal, the heck with what anyone else thinks. Brand new motors come along with a brand new price tag, and a warranty. Is it worth it? Seems to me that it would be up to the person who is buying it."

"Sounds good Paul, doesn't

"Sounds good Paul, doesn't answer any of my questions however.

I am sure there is some sort of Blue Book in the minds of outboard enthusiasts and a thumbs down assessment isn't going to ruin my day. A little info would sure help."

"I've seen fifties era 7.5

"I've seen fifties era 7.5's go for fifty bucks, then agian I've also seen a mint 7.5 never been run go for seven hundred and fifty bucks. Where does yours belong in value, I dont know, whats it look like, who did you buy it from, and is there someone out there that would give you your 175.00 back for it? It's kinda hard to see it from my house. There's lots of 7.5's out there, and getting one that "runs" for a hundred, or two, is pretty common place. What year is your mariner, have you investigated the condition of commpression, spark, and such things that can make or break the value of such a motor? How's the paint, to some peaple the paint is a good indicator of how well the motor has been cared for. Five hundred bucks sounds reasonable for a 15hp and they go for about that, or more. One thing is for sure, it aint worth a quarter if it leaves you stranded out in the lake. A used motor that seems to run good can and most times need a tune up, or a lower end, or a carb. After doing, or even worse having a mechanic do work on a motor could cost more than what you paid for the motor in the first place. Post the model number for your Sears 9.9 and hopfuly Graham with his library of manuals can give you the details about your motor."

"My two cents - first the Evin

"My two cents - first the Evinrude - price sounds to be in the high end of "market value" - but you do mention it is running good. A similar Gale, Scott-Atwater or the like would generally sell for 100 bucks or less at that vintage.

15 Mariner, depending on year and whether Yamaha or Merc built will normally sell in the 1000-1500 dollar range depending on condition. Sounds like a good buy on that one for sure.

Your 9.9 Sears, depending on year, is most likely either built by Eska (out of business but used Tecumseh Powerheads) or built by Force (formerly Chrysler, bought by Bayliner - US Marine, sold to Brunswick and given to Mercury - then discontinued)."

Warranty is one way value is d

Warranty is one way value is determined.Today with shop time in many areas approaching the $100/hr mark you can easily spend $500.00 on your " belchfire special " that looked good and ran at the time.If you got a one year warranty on the 7.5HP then it was a good deal.

"Thank you everyone, these were the answers I was looking for. The Evinrude at $175 came with tank, fresh from the mechanic...it is a back-up motor so $175 is high...yes thanks.

I feel better about the Mariner now, even though I bought it from a business acquaintance who has given me fine deals in other areas...he fished it frequently.

Graham, the Sears Model #225-581991...could you tell me who built it and where I can get parts other than the VERY EXPENSIVE Sears parts house. (plastic engine cover $320) think I will stick with the patched up one...laughs

The Sears engine just had the entire power head rebuilt...everything new including all wiring w/tank, mounted on a 14' heavy aluminum sled (bass boat style), sitting on a Brand Spanking New Trailer, fully found, all gear...for $1700

Everything works great, I am just interested in source information for the engine should I ever need it.

Thanks everyone"

"Your Sears is a 1989 model built by Force (which was Mercury at that point).

While alot of parts for that model have now been discontinued, quite a few will still be available from a Merc dealer and there is probably a significant amount of "old stock" still around if you look/ask.

The engine cover from Merc sold for about 140 bucks (now discontinued - but again may still be available). Also, the cowel from the 9.9 and 15 horse Force models of the same vintage will fit exactly as well - so maybe keep an eye on Ebay for someone selling one off.

Otherwise, if it is simply broken/cracked, automotive body filler (fiberglass) may easily repair it..."

"Just my 2 cents ,if your happy thats all that matters.I don't want to ruin your day but go to this web site WWW.Kellybluebook.com how they come up with these appraisals is beyond me.I have a 1979 electric start ,CD-2 ignition,35hp,Johnson in mint condition it is only worth $175.00,if you needed a new or used starter motor it would cost you $175.00 the whole motor in mint condition is only worth $175.00.Now you know what "BOAT" stands for"BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND" ha,ha!!!!THE STURGEON GENERAL.P.S. If that site doesn't work try WWW.NADAGUIDES.COM haven't been to either site lately but saved it to my favorites.

"Hello, I'm new here. I have to agree that sometimes those prices don't seem to make sense. My uncle(my dad's brother) has a 1946 5HP Johnson on a (I believe) 1948 Skeeter boat. He says he took it to several shows and has been offered maybe $1000. Both the boat and motor are in excellent shape. They've been stored in a garage all their life. I would think a boat and motor that old and in that condition would bring several thousand dollars. For an outboard motor and boat they're antigues."

"Norman, I hear you - but an item is only worth what someone is willing to pay. And since a boat/motor combo is a little big to put in the "rec room" as a conversation piece, in most cases it's value lies in it's usability.

And while there are no doubt collectors out there they may be willing to pay more for an "exceptional" piece, they are somewhat less prolific than collectors of other items.

In most cases an old outboard (or boat for that matter) is just something that can't be used or will be difficult to find parts for if you do want to use it..."
