I have a 1967 evinrude 3hp weedless motor that I am not sure if the water pump is working. I submerged the lower unit and turn the drive shaft with a1/2 in drill. W/O the tube inserted it pumps water about 2 ins. but with the tube inserted it barely dribbles out. The impeller looks good and is not sliping. Any suggestions?

"Louie, you should get a "fair" flow out of the top of the water-tube. Nothing like a water fountain or anything like that.

The drill should be turning somewhere in the 700-1500 rpm range (normal drill) which would mimic normal to just above fast idle on the motor.

Barely dribbling sounds like there is either a seal leak or the impeller is giving up on you..."

The only seal I see is at the tube entrance. I am not seeing any seal where the pump housing and drive shaft meet(is that correct?)

"Louie, you are correct - the seal on the driveshaft is at the bottom (or below the lower plate) of the waterpump.

The seals I'm generally referring to would be yes, the watertube itself where it enter the pump cover..

the base of the water pump (not tightened correctly could cause a lead at this point)..

And you can check the integrity of the tube itself - I replaced one for a guy just a few months back that had a hole rotted right through it. The tell-tale was a little weak and we went over the whole thing a couple times before finding the hole part way up the tube (never saw that before)...."

"Graham, thank you for the information. The tube is good as I checked it carefully with air. Can the gourmet itself be purchased? I did take another tube and place a small o ring around it to create a better seal and then redid my drill test. I then got a good flow about 3 to 4 inches above the tube. So I would assume that is my problem. Again thank you."

"Louie, sounds like you caught the problem.

Usually every second impeller change I will get a whole waterpump kit because the cover and it's associated seals/gaskets etc do get worn out over time and I figure it's well worth the few extra bucks..."
