3.7 L Mercruiser shifting issue

Had a mechanice put in a new gimball bearing and shift cable. Used it for 15 minutes and after shifting from neutral to forward about 4 times, it no longers shifts into forward, just only reverse and reverse then works going forward as well once you shift into reverse. Who can tell me what the problem is??

wheel not in the slider,have to pull the drive to check it.

What you mean by the wheel isn't in the slider?? I'm not familiar with inboard/outboards sorry

That could explain the set screw I found on the floor of my boat after I got it back that pretty much looks like that one.

Actually the bolt had come out of the end of the shifter cable on the side of the motor, evidently no nut was put on when installed. Found it about 10 minutes after I posted on here.
