3.0 surge or miss

I have a 3.0 in my 87 Sylvan and it has started to make a noise it sounds different from drivers seat than in back seat it is tho it is missing every so often sounds like a thud noise. Makes outdrive jerk up, motor never changes noise or pitch. Cant figure it out it used to do it just before i got on plane but now doing it all the time. Any ideas? Thanks
 
yes it is a cobra outdrive with stainless prop and stabilizer. Also on outdrive at front by trim arms there are two plastic covers but one is missing they cover two holes on side is water going in them hurting it?
 
Can you take a pic of the plastic cover? Offhand I can't think of any plastic cover that might be missing that will cause you a problem. Based on your first description my initial (guess) would be that the dog clutch is slipping?
 
No i am on cell phone dont know if i can get pics uploaded sorry. Anyway they are just plastic i would think water would get in anyway cause there not sealed.
 
Guys i put muffs on it yesterday i think what it is doing is it is backfireing a little bit so im guessing maybe need points adjusted? Well im gonna have it switched over to electronic ignition this winter so if it makes it through rest of this year all that will change! Thanks for the help!!!
