Hi everyone, ive just brought my 1st boat, its a 19ft shetland 536, and it has a 3.0 omc cobra engine, when i collected it matey fired it up for a few seconds and it started fine.A few days later I was going to take it out so i tried starting it and it wouldnt start, it was just turning over until the battery died. So i rang matey and he said i had not primed the enough? So i charged the battery and done as he told me, but it still wouldn't start, and i noticed petrol (gas) coming out of the bottom of the engine, so i rang him back, then he said i flooded it so keep turning it over and petrol will start to come out of the exhaust and it will start, so i charged the battery AGAIN, and i went to start it again and petrol is still leaking out of the bottom of the engine and my 20 litre ( 5 gallon ) tank was empty ( and it was full the day before!! And now its not even turning over, it winds a little bit and makes a loud clunking/banging noise? any ideas what could be the problem? have i been screwed? Please help

What do you mean by the "bottom of the engine" around the oil pan or ??? Check your oil dipstick to see if it smells like gas, if it does then consider yourself lucky that it didn't start and follow the Chiefs advise above!!!!!

Ok, a couple things come to mind. Is the fuel line leaking? How about the fuel pump? Check the fittings from pump to carb. There should be a clear tube running from the carb to the fuel pump. Is it full of gas? Is the carb flooding? That banging sound that u hear sounds like your engine oil is contaminated with so much gas that it's either igniting in the oil pump or the oil is so thin that the engine isn't getting lubrication. Does the oil smell like gas? If it does, don't try to start the engine until the oil is drained & changed & u find out where the gas is coming from. It sounds to me like your carb is the problem. And "matey" is an idiot. Don't ask him for anymore advise. He's clueless.

nope matey knows what he was doing got rid of a bomb to a unsuspecting guy.

Should have asked us before you gave him the money. Even a auto mechanic would have known not to buy it if you brought it to him first.

got an OMC cobra 3.0. took it out and ran it for about 20 minutes. then it died. after a minute it cranked back up, and ran for a few more minutes, then died again. my gas gauge doesnt work so i thought maybe it was out of gas. a gallon in it and limped back to the ramp and pulled it out. went to the gas station and it only took 2 gallons to fill it up. so now i'm thinking it maybe the fuel filters? before i took it out i did check pionts and cleaned em. any ideas? also need suggestions on how to troubleshoot fuel gauge.

Sounds like the fuel pump is maybe bad? The way it's supposed to work is if the pump is bad it's supposed to go up the yellow hose and you should see it. Not starting, the points could go bad in 1 second. Test for spark at the plugs? Like the other suggest, check the oil for gas, any gas at all will ruin it. Check the carb for the float being stuck. It can stick and allow lots of gas through the carb, soaking the plugs and not starting.

You should start your own thread and fill out the profile. You might be close to someone who can help. Testing the guage? Key on. At the tank ground the pink lead and see if the guage moves. If it moves the guage is good the sender in the tank is bad and needs replaced. Make sure you get the same sending unit as they make different ones. The thing to be careful of? The screws are EASY to strip.1 stripped screw and it's a PITA. The starting issue, check for spark. The points, cond. are cheap replace them. Carry a set and a coil too.

Jerry, thanks for the heads up. I pulled the inline fuel filter and cleaned it, and cleaned flame arrestor. Took the boat out and ran it for 4 hrs straight with absolutely no issues. Ran perfectly. Cheap winch stripped while I was pulling the boat out so I had to use vice grips, but that was a cheap fix once I got it out. Will check the fuel guage, thanks, again.
