3.0 Mercruiser engine timing

I'm a new member, just replaced the engine in my boat with a new engine. I swapped over all the necessary parts and now ready to do the ignition timing. I am lead to believe that marine engine timing is slightly different from automotive timing, not sure about that? The original engine is a 1993. Can anyone help with the procedure or direct me to an older post?

Micky!

need a serail number or can you identify the type of ignition being used.

There are different proceedures for different ignitions.

Mercruiser ser. #6806118 there is a sticker on the dist. SAE J1171 Delco cap and has 2 connectors on the side. One has 2 wires red and brown the other is a 4 pin connector with a black and 2 whites that are not being used. I just received an email from the company where I purchased the engine. They sent me a 6 page attachment with detailed procedure. I will read through this before you go to a lot of work to explain it also.

I just read through the procedure and for the most part seems easy enough. It looks like I loop the white wires and make sure I have 12v on the black wire.
I'm not sure about the use of the required adjustable timing light.

140hp 181 cub in GM motor,4 in line. Hi,ive just bought a electronic Delco remy distributor, similar to one in the attached PDF,but mine has onebrown [to neg on coil]and one pink [to positive side of coil],but the other output is just one black wire.the ign coil is a standard coil[well it looks standard][i bought the dist and coil from a marine outfit] Im just checking that ,do I ground the black wire while checking the timing via timing light, and do i follow the procedure as in the attached PDF and set to 1Degree BTDC?,Then disconnect the black wire.Ive had the motor running, but want to define the timing ,properly. Thanks
