Took the boat out after topping off the tank with maybe a gallon . Ran fine til I realized I forgot to add a few ounces of oil to the fuel after topping off. After I added mix it started surging and we had to squeeze the fuel bulb to keep it running right. It was quite smiley but the plugs weren't fouled... it just surges pretty bad except when he's priming it... is it the fuel mix or fuel pump or?

How can we answer that when there is no mention of the size of the tank !-------What motor ?----What type of tank ?

It's an 81 evinrude 50 (BELCIC) The question was pretty direct.. can too much oil result in these issues... but anyways it's a 6 gallon GOTT fuel tank with a new chain saw filter new intank hose new brass connector and new hose to brass connector

Here is a direct answer.-----Too much oil will not cause surging problems.-----Surging is usually a lack of fuel / air leak problem.

Topping off the tank with just one gallon, then adding approximately 2.5 ounces of 50/1 oil...... I don't see how that could have any effect on the engine.

However, when you use the primer solenoid, you are bypassing the carburetor with the fuel primer solenoid that is being fed by the same pump. This indicate the pump is okay and that the carburetor is somewhat fouled.

I don't know how raw oil could have been fed to the carburetor... BUT... that's what it sounds like. Drain the carburetor float chamber and let us know what you find. As a last resort, dismantle and clean the carburetor.

This usually happens when someone has a completely empty tank and adds the oil first... that shoves the raw oil up the fuel intake to the carburetor when one adds the fuel on top of the 16 ounces of oil.

1981 model 50 hp did not come with the primer solenoid.

Yeah... Forgot momentarily what year it was. Blame it on age.

Ignore this statement on reply #5 (However, when you use the primer solenoid, you are bypassing the carburetor with the fuel primer solenoid that is being fed by the same pump. This indicates the pump is okay and that the carburetor is somewhat fouled.)

Replace with: Priming with a fuel mix via a spray bottle and having that get rid of the surging indicates a carburetor problem or a failing fuel pump.

To test the fuel pump... pump the fuel primer bulb by hand constantly, acting as a manual fuel pump. If this makes a difference, I'd suspect the pump, if not, suspect the carburetor.

Thanks for the replies guys

Should I purge the fuel system? It runs perfect full throttle as long as the bulb is held and released to suck up more fuel held again and released continuously..I haven't messed with it at home yet but if it idles ok does that mean the fuel pump is good as long as it idles? It smoked a good bit and looked like there was some rainbow in the water.. also where is the exhaust on this motor ?
