1992 4.3lx.... A month and a half ago i got a little shallow and sucked up some sand and the thermostat got stuck in the open position (usually sits at 165 deg and the temp would not raise above 135 deg.
). I installed a new thermostat (and flushed the system) and the new one worked fine for about 3-4 weekends then last weekend the same thing just happened again. First; is this thermostate ruined(I'm trying to avoid paying another $25) or can it be cleaned(how?)and second is there something else i needed to do to flush it out or is there some other possible prob?
Help!!! what is causing the problem????

"sounds like you have a little sand or debris in the system. Pull the Tstat and flush it again. The tstat is just a valve that opens at a prescribed temp. Once you pull it out you will see if it is hanging open. You might be able to free it up and test it in a pot of water on the stove. If you are worried about spending $25, you might have the wrong hobbie :). cheers"

Are you saying your O

Are you saying your OD sucked up some more sand and that caused the failure? Follow what MistaHays advised. Is the thermostat a Mercruiser part or aftermarket? Stick with the OE part if it is not an OE. You may need to drop the LU and clean out the impeller or change it and backflush with it off from the T'stat inlet. I would also pull off the T'stat hsg. and clean it out.

"Thanks for the help guys,
I went to beach the boat in a nice sandy cove and ran into a problem with the trim. easy fix, but the OD sucked up some sand. the ride home everything ran fine. the next trip out the temp would not get up to 165 (normal) and hung around 130-135. i replaced the thermostat and flushed out the engine (there was some sand it the system) buttoned it all up and things ran fine for a few weekends. now i'm back with the same problem. i just need to know if i possibly have something else i need to check before i replace the thermostat/flush again. That is why i wanted to know if the thermo could be cleaned and reused not because of the money, but why replace something when i can just clean out the first one. it was bought from Sea ray so it should be a Mercruiser part. any ideas as to what else would cause this problem other than the sand issue???

Thanks!!"
