290 Duo prop universal joints ( Serial# 29500244H)

New to the forum but I've been lurking ever since I acquired a boat with a Volvo motor and outdrive, Can't say enough about how great this forum is and from all the posts I've read how helpful the People are on it. I have the above leg behind a AQAD30a and I am changing the universal joints, I figured out what orings and seals I need, but I understand I need a crush sleeve. On any of the schematics I've looked at I can't find what they would call a crush sleeve, any help on this is appreciated and any tips on doing this job also.
Thanks Kilwinning

You need a manual and tighten the input shaft to the proper bearing preload using a string pull method. Go to boatinfo library and look up your drive I tells you how to check for proper preload on the bearings. Yes you do need a new crush sleeve.

Be sure and check verticle shaft end play before you take it apart and pay close attention to all the shims as you take it apart. Some are real thin and easy to damage very important you dont get them mixed up.

This spacer keeper is a common wear item and should be upgraded then you can check/adjust verticle shaft end play with the proper nut.
You should also replace the PDS bearing while your at it.

Thanks for the for the answers, much appreciated. I have the engine out as we speak and have done the PDS bearings with the open type and a grease hose. I have a manual for the engine and one for the leg downloaded to my computer, that crush sleeve could they call it something else because I can't find it on my schematics.
Thanks

pretension sleeve. Have you disassembled the upper gearbox yet? It depends on what design it is, one uses shimming to get the preload on the dual bearing box. The crush sleeve goes in between the two bearings. You dont need a new crush sleeve if your using the old bearings as long as you can get the run in bearing pretension according to the book. Its about half of the new bearing spec.

That's good to to know I was getting a little confused about doing the bearing pre load because I had read about Torquing that screw to get the preload and also the crush sleeve. No I don't have it a part yet, I want to get the motor back in and then move on to the next step, I got orings for a 280 exhaust pipe which are different, So work came to a grinding halt this weekend. I ordered the parts to do the shift seal as well as the universals and I ordered a crush sleeve so I'm committed. I'm off work tomorrow so might be a good time to pull that upper gear box apart and see what I have
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Will do, Since they invented smart phones I take pics of everything I take apart. I'll have to see when I get it apart, In 1999 they replaced some bearings and what not to the tune of 2800 and before I got it had sat for a bit.
thanks Kilwinning.
