Anyone tell me which oil I should use in a early 90's 290 DP
"googled" it, and was told EP80-90 gear oil, then told "same as the engine oil" (engine is a v8 diesel) then rang a VP dealer in Es*** and they said straight 90!
Anyone clarify
Regards Nick

Watch out for where you are getting your information.

The 30W (40W in warm climates) engine oil is used in the s/p AQ series drives that use the die cast aluminum slinger pump.
Do not use heavy gear oil in the AQ series s/p drives...... you'll risk damge to the slinger pump drive pins and may loose oil pumping.

The Duo Prop drives do not use the slinger pump..........., instead, the lower gear set pumps the oil up to the transmission.
You want the heavier gear oil for the Duo Prop.

The first DP's were specified to use GL 4, later drives are to use GL 5 gear oil.

Thanks Rick and Chris for your replies
Would I be right in thinking GL 5 is ep75-90 and GL 4 is ep 80-90 (just "googled GL 4/GL5 oil)
The tilt ram ends on my 290 are round,as opposed to square, would this mean its the later 290?
Dont know if I'm splitting hairs here, but is there that much difference between both oils
Lastly, does the oil need to be synthetic?
Thanks both for your patience
Regards Nick

Either oil viscosity should be OK.

As for synthetic...... some of the sliding sleeves cannot create enough friction with synthetic gear oil. You'll just have to try it, and see if the sleeve makes good friction with the gear cups.
If not, you have two choices.

  • you disassemble and mildly lap the sleeve into the gear cups.
  • you drain and change back to non-synthetic.

If you have not re-sealed this drive, this is your oportunity to kill two birds with one stone.
