"Trying to remove upper end of my 280 drive for engine removal. Have it loose but can't pull off the spline. Anyone have this problem?
Thanks, Dave"

"If you are pulling the engine

"If you are pulling the engine it is best to remove the entire outdrive to access the clamp ring that must be removed.

Disconnect your shifting cable, exhaust bellows, driveline bellows, water hose and remove the lock pins. Then grab the drive near the base and lift it up as you pull it backwards.

There may be some rust between the horizontal shaft (bellhousing side) and the yoke on the upper gearcase that is binding them up. Use a bit of persuasion and they will free."

"David, the people who cannot

"David, the people who cannot pull the spline (I assume you are talking avout the u-joint yoke) are in most cases the ones who neclected to grease the spline the last time they installed it.

As Mike said, use some persuasion; and if that fails, remove the 4 clamping ring Allen screws, then remove the Allen bolt attaching the gear to the u-joint primary shaft. You will have to remove the engine with the bellhousing and the u-joints attached, then free the spline once the engine has been removed from the boat."
