I have a 280 stern drive on my

I have a 280 stern drive on my AQ151C and it is very hard to turn. I removed the cable to the wheel and the wheel turns freely. Is the problem with the joke bearing or could it be something else or both. What do I do to fix it.I am also thinking about rebuilding the engine. What would a reliable mechanic charge. Can you give a low end/high end estimate.

John, I do almost exclusively the AQ series engins/drives. I'd also suggest that the spindle arm has rusted and caused swelling in/around the Collar Steering fork and bushings.
(These rarely get greased as they should)
**Bad news is, this needs to be disassembled completely in order to repair it.
**Good news is, this is generally a low parts cost fix (two plastic bushings/one V ring seal), but can be labor intensive.

Best to plan some additional work in these areas while doing this.

Use two wooden wedges outside of the shield to dive the CSF down once the "Pinch Bolt" has been loosened. It works and will not scratch paint from the area.

Now I believe that what El P is suggesting could also be a part of this.... He is talking about the Main Suspension Fork/Intermediate housing "pivot tube" bushings and related parts.

You can loosen the helmet... turn the remaining portion of the drive...... and either find this to be true, or eliminate this as the cause!

My bet's on the Collar Steering Fork bushings since you mention that you disconnected the cable (from the spindle arm, I presume)!
Or did you? Maybe I missunderstood this!!!
If so, then disconnect the cable at the spindle (tiller) arm...... and give it a try.
