Hi all I have a 280 drive unit

Hi all I have a 280 drive unit and think I may be sucking air in somewhere. If i block the intake and put the hose on the lower intake hole and turn the tap on as soon as tap is full on i get water trickleing out from the collar/area below the plastic elbow. Is this a indication of the seals failing at the bottom of the intake pipe.I cant make out where the water would come out if the seal was leaking down their would i be right in saying it would appear at the top below the plastic 90 degree bend area.
cheers
Keith

It seems to me that the problem is the gasket between the raw water hose connector and the water pipeThe gasket may be either loose or defective.

No the water comes out between

No the water comes out between the top bit of metal and lower metal caseing where the leg actually swivels .The gasket is not leaking is the tube that comes up thru prone to corrosion wonder if it has failed.

Ok Decided to abandon thru leg intake and fit a hull fitting. Can anyone give me any info on where a hull fitting should be positioned.

"Keith, personally I would stick to through leg intake, as it will cause you far less problems than through-hull.

Regarding the leak you are talking about, I only see two likely possibilities: the gasket between the hose connector and the intermediate housing, or the o-ring between the intermediate housing and lower gear assembly. Replacing both would be far cheaper than cutting ahole into the hull and installing a throug-hull connection.

"Yes i,m with you I dont like

"Yes i,m with you I dont like cutting holes in bottom of boats but to have my legg pulled and the work done I have been quoted between 600 to 1000 dollars depending on how easy it all comes apart. The legg is very old and heavly painted dosent look like it has ever been parted before. The fitting and stuff to go thru hull is 150 dollars and me and a freind who is a GRP laminator man can do it ourselves. If I could do legg meself I would but as I cant hence the other option. If I ever change the motor i will glass it back in thats no drama for me.
Cheers
Keith"

"Keith, here is a parts drawin

"Keith, here is a parts drawing of the 280 leg intermediate housing:

http://www.volvopentastore.com/INTERMEDIATE_HOUSING/dm/store_id.366--session_id. 776792893--cart_id.443433535--category_id.333253--list_time.1191862526--view_id. 328549

If you have a good look at it, you will see that the o-ring at the bottom of the water tube (part 23) seals the water tube between the intermediate housing and the lower gear unit; and that gasket 28 seals between the raw water hose connector and the upper part of the water tube at the fork. If you have water coming somewhere nearby the raw water hose connector (part 27) it would appear to me that either the connector or the gasket needs replacing. If the bottom o-ring (part 23) was bad, any water leaking through it would not be able to reach as high as the outer upper part of the water tube."

"One advantage of a thru-hull

"One advantage of a thru-hull is that sand is less likely to get sucked in. Volvo Penta used thru-hulls back in the 1960's. However, that looks to be an radical solution to a simple problem. Thanks to El P for diagnosing the problem. I couldn't figure out what the heck you were talking about. I didn't know that the gooseneck on the outdrive was available in plastic and I am still not sure what a "collar" is but I do know that the hole on the bottom is a drain. If the gooseneck is plastic it is probably warped or cracked. Replace it with aluminum and install a new gasket. Looks to be a 100 dollar labor if the bolts can be removed without drama. Add a couple bucks if a torch is needed."

OK thanks guys for your input

OK thanks guys for your input always find this forum very informative.I have gone the thru hull route and can report engine has never run so cool I beleive El was right but I sooner have me thru hull I have fitted sea cock on back of fitting and i can now clearly see the water thru the clear 20mm pipe.Plus i run in shallow water a lot so the skin fitting is better for what I use my boat for forever running in and out of beach with kids so gotta be better for me.ONE other point when I was blanking off the pipe from the transom plate i noticed that it had previously be bent badly about as the angle part after tye transom was almost flat so that would also have added to a flow restriction..
Thanks all
Keith
