"Looks like there's a leak somewhere in my outdrive. Since putting on a rebuilt gearbox and using new orings and seals to attach the gearbox and lower end, have been out on the lake 3 times. Each time was for 3 or 4 hours with some cruising and some fishing. The first two times, no change in oil level and no oil in outdrive. Third trip and the oil looks like milk. I didn't pressure test after the earlier work but obviously need to do it now. I've got the electronic shop manual but am looking for the sizes of fittings I should get in order to build a test rig. I'm guessing that a regular bike tire pump will work. Anyone have any ideas on how to build a rig? Thanks"

"You need to perform a pressure and vacuum "leak down" test, whereby an elapsed time frame is involved.
Look on e-Bay.... there is a seller named Tom who sells a unit that will do both P/V for around $75.... ya can't make one for that kind of $$.

You need to drain the oil prior to the pressure test!

What all have you replaced?
What did you use when installing the seals?
Did you change any shimming?
(I have a reason for asking this!)

"Rick,
I suspect the prop shaft seal as there is a slight noise when turning the prop by hand. It sounds like the line cuter rubbing on something but it's an intermittant noise.

The gearbox was resealed by a professional. I'll send you an email.

Thanks for the link.
