280 drive slipping

It had sat for a year or so. The owner took it out and it performed well for a few minutes, then something was slipping been the motor and and prop. So, out of the water, in forward, the prop spins freely counterclockwise, and I could turn it clockwise and slip the bushing in the prop. The boat came with a spare prop, so I installed it. On the water, same result, it will push the boat a couple knots, but over 1200rpm, it slips. Out of the water, the prop turns freely counterclockwise, and I can't turn it clockwise. I'm unable to post a picture of the outdrive. Thanks in advance!

Hi Ricardo, Hows things??
This is for someone on another forum.
Not getting any answers over there.

I asked him to test the prop but he hasn't replied yet.

Hello Jerry...... it's been a long time since we've talked!

Jerry, although it may occur, not often will we see a sliding sleeve slip within the gear cup.

The most likely suspect would be the propeller hub!

That is a very bad hub! Most often a bad hub cannot be felt by hand.
To double check..... mark the outer propeller shell and the inner hub. Run it and see if the indexing changes.

Just because you can't turn the prop by hand does not mean its not slipping under load. Use a waterproof marker to draw a straight line from the cone to the prop's hub. Go run it, see if prop slipped, i.e. if line no longer lines up.

Also, check that drive goes fully into gear when shifted into FWD.
To do this... Remove rear cover on drive ( bottom screw comes all the way out, top screw just unscrews a couple of turns, not all the way.
Shift into Neutral. Remove vertical shift link that goes to the horizontal shift arm on the drive. Shift into forward. Shift cable should extend. Make sure that the linkage that the cable attaches to ( at the end that the vertical shift rod attaches, does not interfere with the drive case when fully extended, i.e., in FWD.
Then rotate the horizontal shift arm into FWD (Usually CW). See if vertical shift arm lines up with the hole in the horizontal shift arm. If not, follow adjustment procedure in manual.
