I have a 28 hp Johnson (exact year unknown but about 1985 according to prev owner). Was running great but yesterday lost power due to lack of fuel. I was able to get it going enough to get it home by hand squeezing the fuel bulb to get sufficent fuel flow. If I stopped squeezing it would die. Yesterday was the first day I used a brand new tank and then fuel line looks very new as well. Any suggestions? thank you

"Hi Doug,
New fuel tank? Is it venting? Try removing the cap and see if you hear pressure release. Could have enough vacuum the pump can't over come but bulb will.
If it was ok with the old tank then try old tank if you can and see if the problem is still there.
If so the fuel pump may have failed or dirty filter.

Dirt in new fuel line clogged filter(I doubt this very much).

When you pump the bulb does it pump easy or is it hard to get the fuel in the engine?
If it is hard to pump,it could be dirty filter. Pump can't pull the fuel past the filter but extra pressure from pumping the bulb will push the fuel in.
Not often is the filter that dirty.
Sounds like the pump is the fault.
I take it the lines are tight,no leaks and the new line is correct."
