"Hi, New to this forum, perhap

"Hi, New to this forum, perhaps someone can help me.

I have a aq260 with a 275 outdrive. I have trouble getting the drive to shift out of forward after being under power. comes out of reverse fine.

It doesn't do it all the time. I can't tell if its in the trottle control box, cable, or drive.

All seems to work smooth with this exception. Anyone experience this before?

Any Ideas. Thanks"

There is a locking plate that

There is a locking plate that keeps the shift cables from moving at the point that the shift cable enters the lower unit. If this is loose you could see this problem... ALSO the shift cable end attaches to the shift plate with a cotter pin (under the cover). There is supposed to be a flat washer under the cotter pin. Check these two things first.

"thanks for the response. I c

"thanks for the response. I checked the two items you mentioned. the bracket holding the cable was tight and the cable seemed secure. I took off the cover on the drive and the cable end had a washer, but the linkage up to the shift mech. didn't have a washer on the bottom end. If that fixes it I'll be very happy. I'll pick up a stainless washer and test it out as soon as I get the boat back in the water. I'll update my results.

thanks again."

"A cone clutch is designed to

"A cone clutch is designed to further engage itself the moment that it senses torque and prop thrust.
The more torque against this thrust, the more positive engagment.
Point being, if the RPM is too high, the clutch will have a tendancy to continue being engaged.

I'll bet while you are still moving FWD, this comes into neutral very easily!

If idle RPM is too high, lower your idle RPM to within OEM specs!
It's worth a shot!

"Ricardo - Thats good info reg

"Ricardo - Thats good info regarding the cone clutch and the higher RPM. I hadn't made that connection before. I did have some Idling issues last summer which forced me to up the idle to prevent stalling. I've since had the carb rebuilt. I adjusted the idle on muffs but of course when I took it out a couple weeks ago, it was still idling higher than it should.

Unfortunatly I'm waiting on a couple other parts so I can't take it out for a week or so!!!

Thanks for your input, I'll let you know what I find when I finally get out on the water again."

"Well I finally got the boat o

"Well I finally got the boat out for a test run. I added the washer and adjusted the Idle, but it still felt stiff and had to pull hard to get out of forward.

While adding the washer to the linkage, I was able to shift the upper gear box easily by hand so that was good.

I tried the throttle in the driveway and found that its stiff then too.

Now its got to be the cable or the controls. I know its not the throttle cable as that moves easily when the shift cable is disengaged.

Has anyone had any luck lubing these cables? Its a Morse brand cable.

Thanks"

"When the cables start to get

"When the cables start to get stiff, the best thing you can do is replace them, as they are relatively inexpensive. Oiling them seldom works; and when it does, it is usually in the short term only.

Also, keep in mind that the drag can be adjusted in many controls..."

thats what I figured. Can any

thats what I figured. Can anyone tell me if these numbers help for getting a replacement

Morse D32377-003-0204.0

Its a 1988 20' bowrider with a 275 VP Outdrive. The control handle has the teleflex symbol.

Thanks

I believe that's a 17'

I believe that's a 17' (204") cable....Any marine parts store should be able to cross-reference the code you provided.

"Yep, that would be my thought

"Yep, that would be my thought also. Just make sure that the new one is of the 33C style.
Place the code at the helm area, not at the drive area.

One other thing to mention here...... This particular drive will use an "Extending Cable" motion for a FWD shift.... regardless of prop hand.
IOW's, a shift into FWD will involve the shift cable extending at the drive, not retracting.
(Some get this reversed)"
