275 Outdrive Q's

I'm new to boats, and we have our first boat. It's an 86 Bayliner Capri 2150 w/ aq225e and 275 outdrive.

I've been having the issue with the outdrive locking down and not getting it able to come up. but I think I have more than 1 problem as well, so bare with me.

- outdrive locks in the down position and won't release without manually releasing the latch.
- most recent trip, i couldn't even get the latch to release by hand so i popped out the rod that the springs attach to and that was able to release it
-- this same trip, as I was pulling the boat in to trailer, I could not get the drive into reverse. This has never happened before. Since then I've ran the motor with muffs on and it shifted in and out of reverse just fine (granted it wasn't locked down because that little rod is still out)
-the outdrive tilt seems to need some encouragement to get up. and when i put it down in the water, the light that normally turns off when the tilt is all the way down, never turns off anymore. It wasn't like this on the first 5 or 6 trips out this year.
-on the way home from this last trip, the drive dropped halfway. so i strapped it up and made it home. Since then i've lowered it and raised it, and it hasn't dropped since, but it is just sitting there.

any idea what my problem(s) could be? Base off browsing these forums I'm guessing the tilt motor/gear needs replaced and/or clean up, and same with the locking mechanism.

tia for any advice.

On the Lift-Out unit, there will be a vertical shaft. This shaft is called a Vice Rod. It is extended via a worm-drive unit driven by the Lift-Out unit's electric motor.
The Vice Rod will have a shoe at the bottom of it called a Pressure Plate.
When the Vice Rod is extended (on it's way to lifting the drive UP) the Pressure Plate first contacts a thrust sleeve on the top of an odd looking push rod.
The push rod depresses the latch unit down causing it to release from the "set pin".
Once released from the set pin, the Vice Rod is now able to push down on the suspension fork arm and raise the drive up.
NOTE: this is NOT a power trim unit..... it is a Lift-Out unit only.
DO NOT power up while the drive is raised!

- most recent trip, i couldn't even get the latch to release by hand so i popped out the rod that the springs attach to and that was able to release it
All OEM parts must be in good condition and in place, or this unit will not work as intended.

When shifting into Reverse, the shift cable moves the gear yoke forward along with a coupling rod.
The coupling rod pushes against a lock brace.
The lock brace can become corroded and sticky making the shift awkward.

-the outdrive tilt seems to need some encouragement to get up. and when i put it down in the water, the light that normally turns off when the tilt is all the way down, never turns off anymore.
When the Vice Rod is fully retraced, it touches a micro-switch that is within the black relay box. This micro-switch disrupts the negative for the amber light.

It wasn't like this on the first 5 or 6 trips out this year.
-on the way home from this last trip, the drive dropped halfway. so i strapped it up and made it home. Since then i've lowered it and raised it, and it hasn't dropped since, but it is just sitting there.
The Vice Rod incorporates a double allen thread on the upper area.
There is a heavy spring loaded friction clutch on the double allen thread worm drive mechanism.
By design, this clutch is there to prevent damage in the event of powering up with the drive lifted.
When set up correctly, a person should be able to force the drive down by hand.
When we trailer, a bump in the road can force the drive down causing the clutch to release. Although a PITA, this is completely normal.
Using straps to support the drive is a good idea.

Sounds like I've caused my own problems then. The previous owner told me he used it as a trim. So that's what I've been doing. now I'll have to dig in and figure out the damage I've done. the part that confuses me is the guy owned it for 9 years. how did he not have problems running it like that!?

Also, thank you for the information. I had no idea that the outdrive was so different compared to newer ones.

The previous owner most likely used the lift-out to raise the drive up a tad bit........, but did so while at very low speed. This is OK to do.
However, when/if you power up, this is when the damage can occur.

He either did not understand himself, or you misunderstood him.

You have a good drive.
The main suspension fork and pivot tube geometry is much better than the gimbal system geometry, and the Cone Clutch gear engagement is superior to the Dog Clutch style.
