270penta outdrive knocks when put into gear

lost speed on water even on hi

lost speed on water even on high rpm.found water in outdrive.replace new oil.now outdrive knocks when put in gear.also got a knock in flywheel area. please help

First check the

First check the shift linkage on the upper gearcase. Ensure that the shift rod fully engages in both forward and reverse. Next check the condition of your universal joints. If you see any rust or play in the joints replace them. Last I would check the condition of your gimball bearing. If water entered the driveline bellows, or passed through the upper gearcase into the bellows, there is a chance the u-joints and gimball may be shot.

"You also need to determine how / why water entered the outdrive. If water stays inside the drive for a period of time it will rust the gears, which will lead to failure. The 'knock' you are hearing may be a piece of chipped gear grinding within the drive. I would drain the oil again and inspect it for metal and water."
