I'm in Australia so the ones i have found on the net could only be shipped whithin the us, Theres pretty much nothing in this country.

"I've just had a read of an archived post that transom shields for 270-280s can ether have single or double bypass holes and y-pipes must fit accordingly.

What identifies a transom shield with double bypass outlets to single outlets.

My currant drive has thru hull exhaust at the present, the y-pipe flange hole is blocked of."

"M Haines, here are some pictures to answer your question.

They are not interchangeable, as the holes of double and single bypass transom shields and Y-pipes are located at differente heights. So, if for the sake of argument you decided to install a Y-pipe with two bypass holes (of course, after blanking the port side hole on the pipe by for example welding an aluminum plug on it) on a single bypass transom shield, you would find the hard way that the remaining hole in the Y-pipe and the hole on the transom shield do not line-up. The following picture is self-explanatory.

"Thank you very much El Pescador
From your pictures I have found my transom shield to be single bypass.

Hopefully I can now have some luck finding a y-pipe to match.

This is a great site, I would never have found anyone where I live that knows this information."

"M Haines, single bypass Y-pip

"M Haines, single bypass Y-pipes that also fit the "new" style manifolds and risers are not easy to come by. In my case, I had to buy a double-bypass Y-pipe and replace my old single-bypass transom shield with a double bypass. I got the job done, but it wasn't cheap.

There is a double-bypass transom shield listed on e-bay, but the seller may not ship to Australia.

I think I'm out of luck with both of those listings.

I have been thinking about getting another transom shield, Not only for double bypass outlets but also so I can have trim.
The 270 drive on there presently has the wrong ratios plus the mechanical tilt has quite a few parts broken.
do you think it might pay to find a complete unit somewhere with the right ratios, transom shield and power trim and y pipe to suit my engine - say a 290?

Or is the transom hole different?

Though it could an excuse to redo my corrosion riddled transom. Just not sure though, I haven't had any experiences with a 290 out drive.
And if they need a different small block chev bell housing it probably isn't worth it anyway.

"M Haynes, if you want to install a 290 transom shield, you have to cut a larger hole in your boat's transom, so that is not a problem (it would be a problem if you wanted to install a 280 transom shield in a 290 hole, though

).

Based on my own experience, your best bet would be to get a 280 double bypass transom shield, a double bypass Y-pipe, and maybe a lower unit for your current outdrive with the correct gears. This way, you would be able to use your current engine and bellhousing. Of course, you may get lucky and get a used 290 outdrive with transom shield, bellhousing, engine, Y-pipe, power trim, the works for a good price. The 290 is just an evolution of the 280, which is an evolution of the 270, they are all excellent outdrives.

Regarding power trim, it would be nice to have it, but then you are looking at either an SX drive or (God forbids!!!) at a Mercruiser. The power trim units installed in the AQ series was not exactly something that VP could be proud of. In my case, I have a 280 and instead of power trim I get by with Bennett trim tabs.

Good luck, whichever way you choose to go."
