270 wandering at low speeds

I have a 19' bayliner with an aq125a and a 270 outdrive that wanders back and forth left and right at lower speed making it quite dificult to fish. I was wondering if this could be the steering bushings? Or anything else? Thanks in advance.

"Check that the steering arm (44) is tight in the steering yoke splines (2). Tighten the bolt (45) as much as you can, but if the sindle is worn you will have to replace the steering yoke.

The nylon bushings (10) seldom cause problems, but the bushings in the steering helmet could be worn.

Even if there is no wear in the outdrive or steering yoke/steering arm splines, I was told long time ago that most of the VP AQ outdrives (and also Mercruisers) with steering cable are prone to wandering at lower speeds (i.e., when not on the plane). Apparently, the high propeller side torque and the shape of the hull in planing boats will make the boat wander is there is the slightest play in the steering. I found that to be the case in my last two boats, and the only way I found to minimize it was by switching from cable to hydraulic or power steering (the play in hydraulic rams is zero or near zero)."

"Thanks very much! I checked

"Thanks very much! I checked everything just now and it all seems to be fine. So i'm guessing i'll have to look into hydraulic or power steering as you say. It can wait though, just knowing nothing is worn out makes me happy."

"Ken , I had that same problem

"Ken , I had that same problem and found out that The nut that holds the cable in the sleeve that it goes through to the steering arm had backed off . I screwed it back on and solved the problem ."

"[b]Yep... agree with El P her

"Yep... agree with El P here. Look at these components that he shows you and see if any could use tightening, replacement, etc..... the more slack that can be removed, the less irritating this becomes.

Also agree that some of this we just have to get used to and put up with in single engine I/O's. Some call this "Bow Wonder", and it is quite normal at low speeds for V-hull I/O boats.... M/C, Volvo Penta and OMC.

Try not to over-correct when this occurs.... just give it a bump of correction, and see what it does. You may find that this helps."

"every bayliner owner I know with this simmular drive and boat have this problem, including myself, just somthing we deal with, but it is a pain because me autopilot has a hard time in close quarters keeping it on a straight line,"

This is not necessarily a Bayl

This is not necessarily a Bayliner only issue. Many V-hulls with a single engine/out drive will do this at low speed unless you take great measures with TT's and dragging a sea anchor or ??? Just the nature of the beast at low speeds.
I can only imagine how confused an A/P would be getting while adding to the issue.
