Hi All,
My son and I are restoring our 1973 Volvo penta 270 t and the steering yoke wont turn-we have removed the bolt on the steering arm an have spread the gap about 1/4 inch. How far do we spread the aluminum arm gap?
Does the grease fitting that attaches to the top round plate that sits on top of the bushing- does it thread into the top of the steering yoke spindle? or does it just screw into the top round plate? the volvo drawing does not show this grease fitting plate. can we get the plate? WE can't get the grease fitting to unscrew. How do we remove the top plate and the steering yoke? step by step
Can I still get the top and bottom bushings for the steering yoke? Volvo part # please
This is the last pink elephant I think we have to fix-- I hope ha ha

Thanks,
tmcboat

everything works on the 270 t but the steering yoke. The 275 and the 280 sterndrives have similar systems and the blogs I have read there has been some steering yoke binding issues. The question is how to remove the steering yoke step b step and can I get the upper and lower bushings
thanks,

May I suggest you scrap the "T" and go standard AQ. The "T" will be nothing but trouble.

I fully agree with Gary. Cut your losses now, before you start pulling your hair out.

If any one is suggesting that the T drive collar steering fork bushings offer fewer problems, and if you choose to believe them, then we are not able to help you.

A bit of info re; the plastic bushings and stiff steering:

Water intrusion around the bushings causes the aluminum bores to corrode.
The corrosion expands and believe it or not, it closes downward on the bushing OD with a force great enough to cause the bushing's ID to bind up the collar steering fork shaft's OD.

I have not seen a T in about 35 years. I've only worked on, I think two and the problem on both was the trim system. I don't even remember what the steering plate looks like. Good luck to you and if this comes out on the good side let us know.
