I have a 19 foot 1972 glastron

I have a 19 foot 1972 glastron i/o with the AQ130C engine and a 270 outdrive. I am having problem after problem with the AQ130C and would like to take it out and replace with some sort of v6. How hard is this going to be? Is it posible to put a v6 on a 270 outdrive? Is the a crate engine out there that will bolt up?

"The short answer is "no&#

"The short answer is "no" unless you are prepared to put in a lot of money. You will need a different gearset, a Y pipe, exhaust manifolds, a new transom shield, a new bellhousing....I don't think you want to go there, unless you can buy a full package (engine with manifolds, exhaust Y-pipe, bellhousing, tansom shield and outdrive).

This has been discussed several times before, please conduct a search in the forum."

"I'm an old retired sailor

"I'm an old retired sailor, but my experience is limited to 485' Kidd Class destroyers. I'm not much help to Travis, but I can turn a wrench so he let me join him on this adventure.

I've searched some of the other postings but have not seen a clear answer (that I understand) -

my question is: "what engine will replace a AQ130C and mate to a 270 outdrive?" If there is not alternative, what is the best source for a rebuilt 130C?"

"Bruce and Travis.

The AQ 4

"Bruce and Travis.

The AQ 4 and 6 cylinder OHC and OHV engines are Volvo engines, and the bellhousings are usually interchangeable, as they do have the same bolt pattern. On the other hand, the V6 and the V8 are Chevy engines (except for the AQ190 and AQ240, which are Ford), and the bellhousing bolt patter is completely different than Volvo.

Also, the AQ130 (like all other 4 cylinder engine applications) has a 2.15:1 gearset in the outdrive, but it needs a 1.61:1 if a V6 or a V8 is installed. Further, the V6 and V8 do have two exhaust manifolds, so they need a Y-pipe instead of a single pipe connected tot he transom shield. Then, there are bypass holes (1 or 2) in the transom shield to accommodate Y-pipes. Most of the early transom shields for the 270 and 280 came with a single pypass hole, and Y-pipes for those are hard to find (I think I still have one in my shop). The ones with double bypass holes do have the holes in the transom shield at a different height than the single bypass holes; which translated means, a Y-pipe with double bypass holes can be bolted to a single bypass hole transom shield, but the bypass holes in the Y-pipe will not line-up with the single hole in the transom shield. And vice versa.

I have included some links to previous discussions about this topic. I hope that reading the threads will help you to fully understand the issues involved.
