270 outdrive upper gear assy question

In looking at pics, I see that the 270 upper gear assembly has two threaded studs that mate up with two threaded holes in the fore position of the top of the intermediate housing. There are two more aft positioned holes in the top of intermediate housing...where are the threaded studs that go into them? Thanks!

Towards the bow of the boat you have two studs that typically remain in the upper unit. The studs are said to be included in upper gear housing assembly when sold new on some drive models.

Towards the rear of (furthest from) the boat/drive you'd use (should have) two Allen head screws. Volvo part number 941807 that looks like this, http://coastalrides.co.uk/volvo-penta-dp-e-bearing-tap-screw-941807
^ The two screws are where item number 15 goes in the following link,
http://www.volvopentastore.com/Inte...on_id.640119809--store_id.366--view_id.784589

Item number 61 in the parts guide linked above is the same two studs found in the upper unit parts guide which can also be barely seen in the following link for the upper unit housing as well. See item number 3 (which again is item # 61 above), http://www.volvopentastore.com/Uppe...on_id.895340188--store_id.366--view_id.784588

Also be sure the two nuts to the studs are in good shape. Item # 17 Lock Nuts Volvo part number 941885.

Awesome...thanks! I had the feeling that there were two studs under the shift cover that went up into the upper gear housing. I am going to grease my u-joint cross sometime soon, so I have been researching things. Rather than re-grease, how hard is it to r&r the u-joint cross? Any special tools needed?

When I re-attach the upper gear assy, do I need to use any kind of sealant?

Is there anything special about those two lock nuts (941885) that I can't pick up the appropriate sized SS lock nuts at a hardware store? The prices for the OEM nuts are ridiculous!

That is incorrect!
The two studs penetrate the Intermediate housing via two corresponding Non-Threaded holes!
Each recieves a special washer and nyloc nut.

These two AFT holes are to recieve two vertically positioned cap screws/washers.

Keep in mind that if you are changing an upper transmission and/or a lower gear unit to another Intermediate housing, critical shimming must be performed.

If original, the 270 can use a Spicer 5-1306X (internally clipped bearing cross caps)
With experience, these can be changed without removing the drive gear/bearing box. It can be tricky, but it can be done.

Use all new O-rings and if in Salt Water, use Quicksilver "Perfect Seal".

Most all AQ series fastener threads are American Standard NC threads. The ones that you are refering to are 3/8" NC.

Be sure and make sure the shims for the lower verticle shaft bearing are in place and dont get lost or damaged they can stick to the bearing and fall, off once apart.

Excellent point.
That would be the first thing to look for when removing the transmission.

.

I think I'l stick with just greasing the cross. Any specific grease I need to use or is standard marine grease OK?

Rick,

In the parts diagram http://www.volvopentastore.com/Inte...on_id.640119809--store_id.366--view_id.784589 I do not see a washer for the nyloc nut. Are you sure there is one? I would like to get all the parts I need before I start the job. Thanks.

Some drive models had the washers installed new while some did not. Some to most (older) parts catalogs for the AQ series don't seem to show a washer but the later parts diagrams started to show/add the washers under the Allen bolts.
For example, take these two Intermediate Housing found in the following link below... The Intermediate Housing for the 270 Drive don't show the washers while the next Intermediate Housing down for the 275 Drive does show them as item number 15A.. < Which by the way is Volvo part number 942551 that you will need/want to order should you decide to follow the steps mentioned in the quote below taken from an OEM Volvo service manual covering AQ 280- DPC drive model.

Install the upper gear housing on the intermediate housing. Use new Allen bolts item 1, (2 pcs), Washers item 2, (2 pcs) and Nyloc nuts item 3. Many drives do not have washers under the bolt heads. When overhauling however, washers shall always be fitted. This applies to all drives. Apply some grease to the Allen bolt and stud threads, and to the contact faces of the nuts and washers. Tighten the screws and nuts in diagonal sequence and evenly all around and with a torque of 28 LB.FT Use tool 885008 and 885009.

Not much info about the actual martial used searching the Volvo number 941885-6 like the Mercruiser nut shows below, http://www.parttarget.com/5310-01-2...&searchoption=sku&originalsearchtext=941885-6

Another thing you want to look at is the brass keeper/spacer they have only so many shifts until they need replaced. Measure end play on the verticle shaft with a feeler guage between the upper nut and bearing if more than .020 you need to correct it. There are three different nuts with different flat difference. If the new keeper doesnt correct the end play get a different nut and torque to 85 ft lbs it is a reverse thread nut.

Given that the outdrive has never had them in it's 44 year life and is in great condition, I think I will pass on adding the washer unless I can find anywhere that will ship two of them two for a reasonable shipping charge. Several places estimated shipping at $13-14! Throw them in an envelope and ship USPS for less than a dollar for crying out loud.

For that mater, I would think that I should be able to find a suitable washer at my local Ace Hardware or fastener store.

They can be rather thin also they go between the outer race on the bearing and the intermediate housing you should be able to pick them out with a sharp knife. If not present you want do do the proper shimming procedure and make sure its correct. It uses the same shims for the upper cover on the gearbox!
