I have seen several post's concerning the oil to be used in the out-drive. The question is will putting regular outboard lower unit oil (90 weight) be detrimental to the out-drive.

"I read somewhere that the 270 was designed to use many types of low cost oil. (I don't think any type of oil is low cost anymore!) The Volvo manual stated "Same as engine" in that case my motor, AQ125b, calls for 10w-40 so thats whats in my leg. I use Penzoil non-syn. No problems yet."

The Volvo and Seloc manuals recommend "same as engine". I've used either 30W or 10W-30 in my 270 and it's still going strong after 35 years.

A few months ago I changed the oil in the leg and used the above mentioned 90W oil. After reading the posts concerning Leg oil realized that I should have used 30W I was wanting to know if that is a problem. Should I change the oil to 30w or am I in good shape.

"William, I don't have any

"William, I don't have any personal knowledge, but I recently saw this on another boating site when someone asked a similar question:

I doubt any damage was done to the drive by gear oil. Gear oils and Motor oils are acyually weighted on 2 different SAE scales. 90WT gear oil and 30WT engine oil are approximately the same viscosity at operating temperature. If there were a "90" on a motor oil scale it would be thick as grease.....

I also found this site that shows various viscosity ratings, which shows that 90W gear oil is similar to 40W engine oil in terms of viscosity.

Based upon this, I would not change it, but would use either 30 or 10-30 next time you change the oil."

"the 90 could cause some slipp

"the 90 could cause some slippage at the cone clutch. nothing to panic about, but go back to 30 next change. do not use synthetic."
