"Hi all,
I'm restoring an old Yamaha STR18 (any one else got one?) boat with a VP 170/270 setup.
I bought a new hose which fits on the inside of the transom shield and the gear selector cable goes through it. The cabel I'm using is Teleflex.
I would have expected the cable to be a tight fit in the hose or at least at the top plastic cap but the cable is a lose fit in it.
I'm sure water will come in through this hose once I launch the boat for the first time.
What is wrong here ?"

"Either the seal at the top of the hose is too wide or the Teleflex cable outside diameter is too narrow.

A way around would be as follows: First, make sure the hose is vertical and attached to the transom and the top of the hose is above the water line. Second, I would consider using some turns of electrical vinyl tape around the Teleflex cable sleeve in the area where it enters the rubber hose until you get a tight fit.

That should cure the problem."
 
secure the hose as high as pos

secure the hose as high as possible on the transom. they were never really watertite.
