25hp starter solenoid

I bought a new starter and solenoid for my 1996 Evinrude 25hp TELED and I can’t make the solenoid work. I can run the motor on an automotive solenoid but it has to be frame grounded so my hood doesn’t fit right. The old solenoid had an all plastic housing but the new one has a small metal top. Wiring: with control posts on top. The positive cable from battery goes on the right larger post the starter motor is connected to the left larger post. The starter button connects to the larger post and the right small control post. The neutral safety switch connects to the positive larger post and the left smaller post. When the starter button is pushed there is 12 volts on the top control posts but nothing on the starter post. Can anyone tell me why this is not working?

??-----Electrical stuff seems to be so confusing.-----One of the small posts on the solenoid has to go to ground.----Likely through the neutral switch.----Your neutral switch is not wired correctly.--Review your wiring before you make expensive smoke.

Because you bought the wrong part. Automotive solenoids are grounded thru the mounting bracket. Your boat grounds thru the 2nd small post.
Yes, I understand your new solenoid has 2 small posts but one is NOT a ground, it is a 12v output to the ignition ballast bypass for an automobile. Most likely that incorrect solenoid is not a sealed unit & could blow you up too.
Here is your parts image.

Buy the correct part:
OMC/BRP 586180
SIERRA 18-5808
ARCO SW622

Agreed, do not substitute automotive parts for the marine parts. They may look very similar but can have significantly different operability.

OMC Part # 0586180 is what the OP needs to make the starter circuit work properly.
