"Hey all, this is my first post.
I recently purchased an old 25hp mercury outboard which is in near immaculate condition. She runs just fine and starts both on the cord and key easy. As a matter of precaution I thought I'd change the water pump and gear box oil before taking her out on the water. I drained the oil (no water or debris in there) and removed the lower unit (easily done, no seizing). When I removed the water pump and wear plate I was horrified to find a lot of corrosion on what I can only describe as "the upper oil seal retainer". In my case this aluminium retainer is gold in colour. The top oil seal of the two was badly damaged but the bottom one was untouched. As a matter of precaution I have removed both (not without a fight!).
My question is - How I do I remove this retainer? Is it removable? I have hacked away most of the corroded parts. I will post a photo later today, but in the mean time you can see the part I’m talking about on this link by forum member Bryan Davis Post. (Thanks Bryan)http://www.marineengine.com/discus/messages/12479/148222.shtml It is the 5th picture down, showing the small round gold/bronze colour pice below the wearplate.
Many thanks in advance..
