25HP Mariner, Is it a Merc or Yamaha

I just picked up a 25HP Mariner. I think it's a 1988 not sure. It has a plate marked 695S Q09240 25M. I'd like to know if the Seloc or Merc manual is the best for this motor. The fellow told me it has a problem with overheating, I'm not sure what to look for as far as possible damage. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Stick it in a drum and see if it pumps a strong stream of water out the tell tale. If not remove the tell tale hose from the engine and see if it gushes out of the nipple, No? Replace the impeller...it may require the upper/lower impeller housings; you'll have to look. If it has a thermostat then take a look at it and the poppit valve if equipped...not expensive parts. Perform a compression test.
