250 Yamaha gets strange fuel contamination

"I have a 250 Saltwater Series

"I have a 250 Saltwater Series that gets a strage paste like substance in the fuel bowl where the high pressure pump resides. The substance clogs the filter on the bottom of the HP pump and I think it has caused the pump to fail for the 2nd time now. After cleaning the engine runs fine for a while then loses power and will not go over idle. I have checked the fuel for contamination and found none up to the HP pump bowl. I also removed all oil and cleaned oil pump and lines, replaced with new oil. Any suggestions?"

"That paste is what is created when you mix gasoline, alcohol, and water. Treat your fuel with a product called Gas-Shok and change you water seperating filters a couple of times. I had the same problem with my fuel system. Fixed it right up."

"To answer Jamie, I am using 89 octane fuel purchased at a local BP.
Thanks to Michael for your advice. We have some suspicions about water in the fuel. I used a gas additive before and felt like it may have caused some of this problem. Did not think about the alcohol in the fuel."
 
If you are using E10 fuel you

If you are using E10 fuel you can get this problem...the ethenol is hydroscopic and absorbs moisture. I would use an additive in the fuel and see how that goes. I believe there are not many that work in E10 fuel.
