"looking to buy a 2008 250 verado. Anyone had any issues w/ these engines? Any service bulletins/ recalls, etc. I should be aware of? Dare I say this, but some folks are telling me to go w/ yamaha instead although I have not yet been given a valid reason why?"

"Dave, the Verado is a well built 4 stroke based on little to no issues being raised on forums such as this. However, to be fair, they haven't been in production long enough to determine if they have any (legacy) issues. Their "initial" quality appears to be quite good.

You could argue that really the way to go would be with a Honda - all bias aside they are most probably the best built 4 stroke on the market.

I am not fond of 4 strokes, and I don't think you will find a ringing endorsement for them anywhere on this board. They cost too much, weigh too much, the power band sucks, the torque band sucks and they require 4 to 5 times as much maintenance time compared to their 2 stroke counterparts. Plus, they will not tolerate being ignored. You might get away without following the maint schedule for a year or two, then after that you have 600 pounds of scrap metal.

I would not rate the Yamaha or Suzuki 4 stoke any better than the Merc, but as noted above, none are in the same class as the Honda.

Is there any reason you are not considering a Direct Injected 2 stroke 250 Optimax? It weighs in at over 100 pounds lighter, will save you a few thousand bucks in intial cost, requires almost no maintenance and will kick the snot out of any outboard currently on the market for power and torque, and is just as fuel efficient and clean (EPA rated) as any 4 stroke out there...

Talk to any "reputable" Merc tech (not a salesman) and they will tell you there is just no comparison between the Opti and a 4 stroke.

Oh ya, it is hard on spark plugs though

Just asking..."

"Whats that your saying? I can't hear you over that stinky & screamin 2 stroke...lol my opinion for what its worth...every larger 2 stroke I've owned eventually needed a powerhead rebuilt or replaced, scoured cylinder walls, (lack of oil) cracked piston or broken ring from catching a port...I still have a 200 Yami 2 stroke that I'm using (have to use up the last rebuilt powerhead) 4 strokes are more forgiving to getting warm and a lack of oil is not really an issue being a 4 stroke...how many times do you hear? ...you need a new engine in your car/truck...I couldn't afford to drive if my car blew engines like my boat has over the years...Honda's are good engines, but the service costs are more than the Yami's..the Yami's are better in the salt as well..in fact the best..I've yet to see any salt build up unsided the block of a Yami engine..that telfon coating works"

"Verado's? Not sure if the 09's are around yet. I'm not much of a Merc guy, so don't pay alot of attention. There are a few guys running them, but the dealer's aren't the best in our city. If they are matched to Whalers I'm sure there will be more up in Campbell River where whalers are a popular choice for the type fishing done up there."

Thanks for info. Found veradoc

Thanks for info. Found veradoclub.com and will send regards to Glen. Reason I'm opting for a 4 stroke is the wife and kids often boat w/o me and once or twice a season seem to forget to put oil in the boat. They wind up trudging back to dock after low oil alarm goes off. So far no disasters....New boat I'm looking at is a whaler.
