25 merc part out?

Hey everyone,

I have a 1999 25 2 stroke merc that has bad compression in the bottom cylinder. To rebuild it is gonna be about 800 bucks. My question is am i better off breaking the motor down and parting it out on ebay or elsewhere? I have another motor and gave 150 bucks for this one just for parts. It is a complete electric start motor that still runs but like i said is on its last leg.

Cosmetically the motor is 100 percent. no cracks and no scratches basically. Its a shame its burnt but o well. I have been offered 300 for it by a local mechanic who wants it for parts as well.

I would love to rebuild it but cant see the value gained in that investment.

Tell me what you think!

Thank you

i would consider that if it made sense money wise. How much would that run? It has about 60 lbs of compression on the bottom cylinder and doesnt appear to be scarred up too bad.

I assume it would be less that a total rebuild.

Im not keeping the motor regardless. I have a new motor so i am just trying to figure out if i am better off fixing then selling, or parting out.

If i drop 800 in a rebuild and sell it for 1200 then its 400 profit.

If i part it out could i get a significant amount more? That is probably how i should have put it in my first post, sorry.

I had a 50 mariner like that, turned out 1 carb leaned out and destroyed a piston and scratched the cylinder wall, honing is a pain but it worked, replaced piston and all rings on all 3 pistons, did not have a head gasket( made that way ) so used pro seal, not that expensive to fix. depending on your skill level pull it apart and see what you got, might not cost that much to fix.

Needed special tool to remove the flywheel, after that its not that hard to dissemble, merc manual was pretty detailed.
