25 Johnson water pump

I am replacing the water pump in my 2000 short shaft 25 Johnson. The shift rod comes apart inside the water intake on the lower unit via brass nuts, one male and one female, similar to a coupling nut. I've unscrewed and separated the coupling but can't get the nut off the bottom of the top rod to allow it to slip through the top of the lower unit.

Can anyone help me with this?

Slip the upper nut up a bit and you'll see a small plastic cone which has a split in it. Notice which was the cone taper faces. Gently force the split open so that the the cone will drop off the shift rod. This releases the nut.

Think about it.... the cone must be there to retain the upper nut, otherwise the shift rod would simply slide up and down within the two connected nuts.

I suspected there was some type of retainer on the rod but I can't get the nut to slide up the rod. The rod and nut is clean and shiny so corrosion is not the problem. I was afraid of damaging the threads on the nut by being too aggressive trying to get the nut to slide up, not knowing what to look for. Soon as I stops raining and warms up a little, I'll try again. Any suggestions how to get the nut to slide up the rod.

And thanks for the quick reply.

It is the paint that usually holds them in place.--------After you get rid of the paint the nut slides right up.

I can't get the nut to slide up the rod.

Possibly you still have the "lower shift rod" pulled upwards and it's in the way.

Spin the prop and see if the "lower shift rod" will push down out of the way so that you can lower the upper shift rod which will allow you to slide the upper retaining nut upwards.

Finally got some warm, dry weather in central Louisiana and time to finish the water pump installation. For the first time in my 69 years, it snowed 3 times in one winter. Usually snows once ever 5 to 7 years.

Apparently when I first attempted to disconnect the shift rod, not knowing it had retainers in the coupling nuts, the retainer got jammed in the nut. A couple bumps on the nut and it slid up, removed the retainer, off came the nut and now all is well.

Thanks for the help.
