"Hey there...

My 1980 Johnson is cleaning up nicely: Replaced the WP, painted the LU and now am noticing that it is kinda hard to shift in and outta gear. I replaced a stripped bolt in the shift shaft link in the leg, with a larger bolt (that linkage thingie is brass!) Any places to start trouble shooting or did I answer my own question?"

A new connecter was the way to go!Is the motor running when you try to shift??

No, the motor

"Hey ssparky...
No, the motor isn't running, just a liiiiitle tricky to shift while on the stand, not running. So you think I should replace the whole link, and not go with my "larger bolt" fix. An old wooden boat trick. How that thing got stripped, I have no clue."

If the notches(in the rods

If the notches(in the rods) are not lined up you end up with problems. And yes the motor should be running ( or the propshaft turning )in order to shift and engage the clutch dog. That is just the way outboards are.
