I have a 1991 mercury i put a 1996 lower unit on it but it has a different shifting rod. Will it still work. maybe just have to change linkage.

Inside the gear housing? i hooked everthing up and it shifts. one of my gears had broke so i am waiting to get my piece in the mail.
