25 HP Mercury kicked

Yesterday Iran my 25 HP Mercury on 14'Jon up river about 3 miles. Stopped and fished about 10 minutes or maybe even less. Decided to change my location. When I pilled the crank cord it "kicked" back, waited a few second and tried again, same results. I sat there maybe 5 minutes and tried again, it cranked properly. Not trusting my luck further I went back down to the ramp, loaded it on trailer and went home. Has anybody ever experience such?

I have had this happen with several motors. If there is a carbon buildup on the piston that is hot from running near WOT and the piston is near the cycle for it to fire again, and still has fuel trapped in that cylinder, ten it will sometimes kick back as the plug fires and the piston is before TDC

Practically new, I have less than 2 hours on the new water pump; I have not run it wot or near wot since replacement. Maybe it's now okay, I intend to test it and keep in mind your replies. Pee stream is very good. I have tested it 2 ways when it wants to kick: (1) Sit with it a few minutes and then re-start - usually this works, (2) loosen the plugs immediately and retighten - always works; this is not a good idea out away from a dock.

I think you have clearly identified the cause in your above 1st reply. Thanks for your help.
