"I have an 82 25hp johnson. My battery is new. When I turn the key to start, the starter engages and the engine turns once or twice slowly then fires off. After a couple of starts the battery drains down and the engine won't start. It seems like the motor is hard t turn over. However when I pull start it it fres right up. Any suggestions?? thanks."

"-Hey, even it is a new batter

"-Hey, even it is a new battery, I would first take it to an auto store to have it load tested, just to make sure you have a good battery, i have seen many new batteries that cause problems.
-Allthough with that said, it sounds to me that your starter "

"I had another battery that did the same thing and I did have it load tested. It tested good, however I got another battery to be sure it wasn't a cell issue. I was thinking starter problem also because it pull starts on first pull. My Dad mentioned timing, but wouldn't it be hard to pull start if timing out?"

"Yes it is probably the starter, if it still pull starts and runs fine, then it is either your battery, which you seem to have eliminated as a problem, or your starter drawing to many amps, which causes the slow rollover."

"Pull the bottom off the start

"Pull the bottom off the starter. You may be lucky and just need a set of brushes ( $8.00 at the starter alternater shop ), I replace them all the time and not hard to do."

"I also tried bumping the star

"I also tried bumping the starter, a couple of times it turned over good in between bumps, but the starter started smoking and it drained the battery down low enough not to start anyway. I appreciate the input from you, thanks..."

"Hey, clean all your connections leading from your battery to your starter. Re-test, if your still having the same problem it will definitely be your starter. As London marine stated, you might be lucky and it could turn out to need just a new set of brushes(located at the bottom of the starter), which can be done at a starter/alternater repair shop, or even by yourself. If it's not the brushes then you will need to replace your starter motor."
