" I have a 1991 Johnson 25 HP

" I have a 1991 Johnson 25 HP engine that will start and run perfect for a while then it will start to miss or cut out as if the ignition is turning on and off. It will run okay at a speed just above idle, but will not power up. This has happened the last 3 times I have used it, but it will start and run fine at first, say for a half mile or so then start the miss. I have bought a new tank and line and had the carburetor rebuilt by an OMC certified mechanic. The fuel is new and the screen or filter has been cleaned as well. Could this be a coil or power pack or something else under the flywheel? It is not plugs as they have been changed several times.

Thanks and best rgards,
Frank "

" Frank.... Check the compress

" Frank.... Check the compression.. should be in the area of 100 psi and even on both cyls. Spark with the plugs out should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue flame on both cyls.

If there are any small beads on the s/plugs, that would indicate that water is entering the cylinder(s).

Remove the black/yellow wire from the powerpack (Kill Circuit) temporarily. If that takes care of the problem, usually the cure is to replace the ignition switch if the ignition switch exists, or look for a flaw in the wiring harness between the black/yellow wire connector and the kill switch/button.
