25 hp 4 stroke

I have a 25 hp 4 stroke, 2004 model. When boat is loaded and is unable to get up on plane, the engine acts like it pops out of gear on occasion. All drive to the prop stops, the engine jumps in RPM's. To fix it I just let the engine idol down and put the shifter in neutral and back into drive and away I go till the next time it happens. What do I need to replace?

Also, I am running this on a 1648 jon boat and was wondering any recommendations o prop pitch?

Sounds like a spun prop hub
you need to mark a line thru the prop shaft to prop
run boat, then see if the line is still straight

I agree. After reading around on the internet I suspected it. This is my first boat motor so learning as I go. Will a new prop fix my problem?

I have ordered a new one and will get the original repaired.

On another note, I have spent 20 years making my dirt bikes and racing ATV engines hotter. Not knowing much about boat engines , I would like to tune it just a little and squeeze a little more power out of it. Any suggestions? Thanks
 
you are not going to get much torque on a 4 stroke compared to a 2 cycle...almost none at mid to upper range....
