"Ok my boat 87 capri OMC 2.3 super under powered, what can be done with this motor to increase power, or should I repower my boat with say a 5.7 merq or vp. This motor will not pull a skier with this combo."

It would make more sense to Sell the boat,+ Buy 1 with a Bigger Motor.....

A 1987 Bayliner usually isn't worth the effort, nor the Money to up-grade the driveline....."

"best and cheapest way to repower it is to find a trashed boat with the power setup you want. Park the 2 boats side by each and start swapping EVERYTHING over from the donor boat. Repair/replace/rebuilding the parts as necessary as you go. The one cool thing about your Cobra is that the transom cutout is the same as mercruiser Alpha and pre-Alpha drives, so a merc powered boat can be a donor too. Find a boat that racoons have made a home in...those always go cheap, and those raccoons never mess with the engine except maybe chewing wiring harnesses...."

"Bayliner sure liked to underpower their boats. However, a good skier would still have NO problem getting up behind that boat if it's running right and well tuned with a 15P prop for skiing. Won't be barefooting or pulling three-up, but should pull 1 slalom skier at 23-25 mph all day with 2 adults in the boat- no problem.
If the hull is mint, a nice merc 5.7L V8 Alpha 1 donor would be the sweetest swap."

i have a 2.3 and it runs fine

i have a 2.3 and it runs fine pulls anyone behind it there is something wrong with your motor/stern drive

"What are your WOT RPMs? Most owners are used to the L4 GM which runs at 4400 max. This little engine makes it's hp up top. OMC rates this engine at 5600 RPMs. If you're not getting that at WOT, you're not getting all your horsepower.

Even if you don't normally run full throttle, you are bogging the engine it you can't achieve it. 19' is a lot of boat for this power plant, but I used to ski behind a 7.5 hp when I was a kid. You may well be overpropped."

I HAVE A 17 FT CAPRI WITH A 2.3 I JUST BLEW THE MOTOR 1TS A 1990 BAYLINER WILL A 5.7 MERC ALPHA 1 WORK IN THIS BOAT . WITH NO HULL MODIFACTIONS
