"I've had my boat out twic

"I've had my boat out twice this summer ('89 Spectrum 1950 w/ 2.3L Ford/OMC Cobra), and the first time it ran fine. The second time (last weekend), the boat overheated just before I was getting ready to load it. I've looked on my Seloc repair manual, and can't decide if the problem is the raw water pump (impeller)or the water circulating pump on the engine. I read about removing the intake hose from the T-stat housing, but can't really decide which hose that should be (the one on the left that goes back to the lower unit)? What is the easiest way to tell which of the two items is the problem? I'd hate to spend nearly $200 for a new engine water pump if that isn't the problem. Also, can I test this in my driveway? It would be a real pain to try and test it in the water due to time and distance. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks."

You can test the raw water pum

You can test the raw water pump in the driveway on muffs. Remove the hose from the t-stat housing (yes it is the one from the lower unit). Crank the engine for a few seconds and you should get a good flow of water from the hose.

"That's what I thought...

"That's what I thought... but before I tried that, I decided to pull out the impeller and check it first. Low and behold the shaft that turns the impeller is broken. So, the new questions are: Where can I get one (can't even find what it's called in the repair/maintenance manual), and how hard is it to replace? Any ideas? Thanks."

"Thanks. Yes, I did my own research and see this will be quite the ordeal. Boo...
Any idea of what would cause this? Regular stresses?"

"I've check an OMC parts manual and I'm not sure that is the part you want. The OMC numbers are:
Water Pump Shaft 911682
Stub and WP Shaft 984264

If you can just get away with the water pump shaft, I think you will find that a much less expensive part.

Good Luck"

"I don't think you can act

"I don't think you can actually replace the water pump shaft itself. The part that Chuck linked to above is the right part, it's actually a Sierra equivalent to 984264 or you can order the OMC # from a dealer."

"Thanks guys. So do you think

"Thanks guys. So do you think this could be caused by regular wear and tear, or should I be looking for anything else when I rip everything open?"
