228 Trim Problem

"Just brought a project boat with 228 in it. Good for age, but has problem with trim. Will trim up to trailer postion and lift up on trailer switch no trouble, but will not trim down. Pump runs but no movement in rams. Have to bleed hoses to get down. Has reverse lock and wondered if this needs adjusting or is prob in pump. Thanks for any help on this."

Reverse lockout valve on those

Reverse lockout valve on those older models is nothing more than a "shut off" valve and keeps the outdrive from raising UP when in reverse.
Is it still hooked up and fuctioning?


Therefore if the outdrive will not go down then it may have been trimmed up all the way and overpressuized the internal valve.

Personally I have never messed with the trimpumps internals. The valving indside is adjustable and replaceable ( or were replaceable at one time)

If you could get a older or model specific service manual it would show/explain where and what internal valves do what.

I would imagine there would only be two or three in the pump. May be worth a looksee. May be a piece of crap floating in the oil!! They are very sensitive to dirt!!
