Good day - i have installed the u-joint bellow to the gimbal housing - now trying to install the pivot pins and I cannot - can't even start them.
Have I installed bellow correctly I don't know. - after installing the bellow the threaded holes on the gimbal housing do not line up with the holes on the bell housing - l have to pull the bellow out in order line the holes up. - but the pins wont even start to thread
The water hose is new and I need to apply force in order to get the bellow up to the housing
To be honest after installing the bellow the bell housing is not straight - not by much
The bellow is installed using Permatex Right Stuff and then clamped - the bellow is firmly in place - when turning the drive side to side there is no issue.
My feeling is that I have not installed the bellow correctly?? - before clamping the bellow down should the holes line up
As I mentioned before I cannot find a mechanics to help me so I am on my own They are either to busy or they want no part of my old Mercruiser drive.
appreciate any thoughts

you are much better off using the quicksilver bellows adhesive...

did you orient the bellows correctly before installing it? The OEM part used to be marked " AFT- TOP"...also, did you put the hose clamps in the proper orientation?

Pretty certain the MCM 228 used a I drive and I'm pretty sure the hinge pins were not threaded and held with a cotter pin...

Thanks Makomark for your reply

My drive is basically the same as Alpha one gen 1

Yes to both - I could not feel the Top end of the bellow slip into the recess

The Pivot Pin - I now have the holes lined up - with some force (strechting the bellow) but still the pin will not screw in - the head of the pin is greater than the diameter of the hole it is going into. I have not used any grease on the pin yet - Even though the pin holes are lined up I think they are off centre
I have not applied any force on the pin when attempting to screw the pin in. - too afraid of stripping the thread.
If the bellow is installed correctly should the pins simply screw in
Are you aware of any literature on how to install Pivot Pins
Thank you for your time

I just spent 2 hours trying to install in these hinge - no luck

Going to get a 5/8 x 18 tap and clean up the threads - before I installed the Bellows I check to see that the pins screwed in properly and they did - i must have done some damage to the threads - both of them

you have something out of whack because its not very difficult to start the pins by hand
Unless you have the wrong bellow

Finally figured it out

The head of the pin was not entering the GH hole ??- So I turned the pin around -put some oil on the head and with head first, gently tapped it and it went in. so l turned the pin around + oil on the head +gently tapping and it went in
I then took the pressure off the 2 matting surfaces, BH and GBH and by jiggling the BH and the pin screwed in
I could not understand why the head of the pin would not entered GH hole and I did not want to force it in - in fear of damaging the BH threads - didn't use the 5/8 x 18 tap

Thank you guys for your help
