I have a 1998 225 Optimax that just had an alarm go off. I was told the ECM gives a code with the combination of lights and horn. I have the "overheat" and "check engine" light on with continuous horn. Does that point to something specific. Where can I find these codes if there is such a thing?

"This is where I'm at with this problem now. If I disconnect the ECT sensor that has 4 wires on it, starboard side, the engine will start and run. It doesn't run correctly, I can't get up to max RPM. Maybe running rich? I bought a new sensor assuming the sensor was bad and telling the engine it was overheating. With a new sensor it does the same thing, with the sensor plugged in it won't start, plug it in and it will.

Any ideas on what to try now?"

"If the ECM detects any failure of any sensor TPS, ECT(engine coolant temp), IAT (intake Air Temp), MAP(manifold absolute pressure), Coils, injectors circuits, it will alarm light up. You can test the coils and ECT with an ohms meter but all the other sensors must be tested with a DDT at a Mariner Workshop. PS. the ECM and ECT has an overheat prgram that activates and significantly retards the timing if the engine temp exceeds a certain temp. by retarding the timing a significant power loss is noticable. this will stay active until the engine temp reduces. u could have an intermittent fault in the ECT or your water pump is shagged."
