"Hi, I'm looking at a 19' Bayliner bow rider with a 1996 225 hp Mariner. Are there any particular trouble spots with this unit? Anything I should be looking for? Any maintenance issues and the like? Thanks, Larry"

"Harry, I belive that a 96 model will be the 2.5 litre model. If so, my only concern is in how much horsepower you are getting from the size of the block.

Anytime you produce more horsepower than the motor has in cubic inches of displacement, a rebuild is in the future.

The 2.5's are about 153 cubic inches - well suited to a 150 XR6 model, but quite small to be cranking out 225 horses.

That means each cubic inch is producing almost 1 1/2 horsepower. That added pressure/stress is very hard on the parts.

This motor is now 12 years old. If it hasn't been rebuilt already, you should count on having to do that in the near future.

Don't get me wrong, the design is quite solid, but just not the correct block for this horsepower. If you are willing to have it rebuilt when required which will give the motor another 8-10 years of use, just factor that in to the price of the rig. Rebuilding this model will run you about 2K.

The 225 stopped using this block and was produced with a 3.0 litre (almost 200 cubic inches) which drastically improved it's "life span"..."

Well now the 95 brochure lists

Well now the 95 brochure lists the 225HP as being 185 cubes and 3044 Cubic cetimeters ---so did they go back to a smaller engine????

"Seems they produced both depe

"Seems they produced both depending on the exact model...
