Merc 9.9hp 4-stroke stalls when it is shifted into gear. It will also stall at normal idle when not choked a little. It is fitted with a steering wheel/throttle instead of a tiller. What carb adjustments should I try? Or any other suggestions?

"Hi,

if you're sure the engine is getting fuel, plugs are ok, etc. then I would probably start by looking at something as simple as the idle RPM adjustment screw. Admittedly, I have no experience with your engine (and not too much with outboards in general, for that matter), but I've occasionally had a very similar issue with my 2-stroke 15hp. This just results from the locking nut on the idle adjustment screw working loose from engine vibrations, which changes the adjustment of the screw and thus affects the idle RPM setting. Not sure whether the mechanism is similar on your engine, though.

If you have a tach available, you could check your idle speed which should be 800 to 900 RPM in gear for your motor according to the specs. Significantly less than that will probably cause the motor to die as you describe.

However, if you have any doubt about what you are doing, proceed with caution... incorrect "adjustments" of the carb might do plenty of harm to the engine, especially if you screw up the mixture. At the very least, you might want to pick up a shop manual for your model to get familiar with how it works. For the price of half an hour of shop work, I've found this is an excellent investment.

The resident Merc gurus around here will probably have some sound and more methodical troubleshooting advice...
