20hp rpms to check timing

Want to check timing my 85 20hp rope start and tring to find out how to set timing.Anyone know the process?thanks

There only WOT timing advance and should be preset from the factory unless you messed with it. Have you checked the engine sync? The carb butterfly should just begin to open as the roller passes center between the two marks on the throttle cam.

Thanks-I just got the motor and being it is 31 years old and not for sure what may have done to it I was curious about it and may want to check.Also, I may want to upgrade it to a 25 hp by changing carb and intake and the timing may need adjusted after that.Thanks again.
